What is an automatic knife (switchblade)?

An automatic knife, or switchblade, is a knife whose blade deploys automatically when you press a button or slide a lever. The automatic knives at Going Gear include both side-opening switchblades and out-the-front (OTF) autos.

What is the difference between an OTF and a side-opening automatic knife?

A side-opening automatic knife swings the blade out from the side of the handle, while an out-the-front (OTF) knife deploys the blade straight out of the top. Double-action (D/A) OTF knives both deploy and retract the blade with the same switch. Going Gear carries both styles.

How do you close a switchblade?

On a side-opening automatic knife, press and hold the release button, then fold the blade back into the handle until it locks. On a double-action OTF knife, slide the switch in the opposite direction to retract the blade. Always keep fingers clear of the blade path.
