Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 – Aqua Aluminum AXIS-Assist Folder

The Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 is the larger Emissary, the model people asked for after the compact 470 arrived. Warren Osborne's design scales up to a 3.45" satin CPM-S30V modified drop point on a CNC machined billet aluminum handle anodized in aqua. On this line the -1 suffix marks the handle colour, so the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 is the aqua handled version of the black 477.

AXIS-Assist does the opening: ambidextrous thumb studs start the blade and the assist finishes the stroke, with the AXIS lock and its safety holding everything in place. The silver deep carry clip is reversible for tip up carry on either side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an assisted opening knife?

An assisted opening knife has a spring that completes the opening once you start the blade yourself. The Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 uses Benchmade's AXIS-Assist, so pressing the ambidextrous thumb studs begins the motion and the assist takes it from there.

Is the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 an automatic knife?

No. An automatic knife deploys from a button or slide without the user moving the blade at all. The Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 is an assisted opener and requires you to start the blade with the thumb studs. Because many jurisdictions treat the two categories differently, it is worth confirming your own state and local rules.

How do you close the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5?

Pull the AXIS bar back to release the lock and let the blade swing shut. The AXIS bar works from either side, so the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 closes ambidextrously, and the safety can secure the mechanism when the knife is put away.

How does the 477 Emissary 3.5 differ from the 470 Emissary?

The Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 is the big brother: a 3.45" blade, 8.00" overall and 3.95 oz, against the 470's 3.00" blade, 6.90" overall and 2.20 oz. Steel, designer, lock and assist mechanism are shared across both.

Does the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 need special steel care?

No. CPM-S30V is a stainless steel, so the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 does not need the oiling a carbon steel blade would. Wipe it down and keep the pivot lightly lubricated.

Is the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 made in the USA?

Yes. It is built at Benchmade's facility in Oregon City, Oregon.

Does the 477-1 qualify for LifeSharp?

Yes. Benchmade's LifeSharp service covers sharpening, cleaning and adjustment for the life of the knife, and the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 is eligible.

Where can I buy the Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5?

Going Gear is an authorized Benchmade dealer. The Benchmade 477-1 Emissary 3.5 has been discontinued by Benchmade, so availability depends on remaining stock.
