Benchmade H&K 14452SBK Tanto Pika Folding Knife

The Benchmade H&K 14452SBK Tanto Pika takes the full size Pika platform and swaps in a 3.50 inch black coated 9Cr13 modified tanto blade with a combo edge, opened by an ambidextrous thumb disk rather than the thumb hole used elsewhere in the family. An all-weather grip pattern and high clip placement make it a discreet, hard-use tactical folding knife. This model has been discontinued and is no longer in production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a modified tanto blade good for?

A modified tanto puts a thick, reinforced point behind a second forward grind, which makes the tip far more resistant to breaking than a fine clip or drop point. On the Benchmade H&K 14452SBK Tanto Pika (SKU BCM-HK14452SBK) that means confident piercing through webbing, cardboard, sheet material and other tough targets, at the cost of some finesse on slicing and food prep tasks.

How is the Tanto Pika different from the standard Pika II?

Two things. The Benchmade H&K 14452SBK Tanto Pika (SKU BCM-HK14452SBK) uses a modified tanto blade opened by an ambidextrous thumb disk, while the 14402SBK Pika II uses a clip point with a thumb hole. Dimensions are near identical at 3.50 inches of blade and about 8.3 inches overall.

What is a combo edge and how do I sharpen it?

A combo edge runs plain toward the tip and serrated toward the handle, so you get clean slicing plus real sawing ability on rope and webbing. Sharpen the plain section on any stone or guided system, but the serrations on the Benchmade H&K 14452SBK Tanto Pika (SKU BCM-HK14452SBK) need a tapered round rod that fits inside each scallop.

Is 9Cr13 a good blade steel?

It is a solid value-tier stainless, roughly comparable to 440A or AUS-8, and at 58-60 HRC on the Benchmade H&K 14452SBK Tanto Pika (SKU BCM-HK14452SBK) it sharpens quickly and shrugs off moisture. Being stainless, it needs no oiling routine.

Is a 3.50 inch blade legal to carry?

It depends on your jurisdiction. Plenty of US states and cities set carry limits at 3, 3.5 or 4 inches, and some treat tanto or tactical patterns differently again. The Benchmade H&K 14452SBK Tanto Pika (SKU BCM-HK14452SBK) measures 3.50 inches, so confirm your local knife laws before carrying.

Where was it made, and is Going Gear an authorized dealer?

Benchmade builds its own knives in Oregon City, Oregon, but the Heckler & Koch program was a separate licensed line listed as Import. Going Gear is an authorized Benchmade dealer, so the Benchmade H&K 14452SBK Tanto Pika (SKU BCM-HK14452SBK) is genuine factory product.
