Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 – 2.73″ LC200N Wharncliffe, Black G-10, Fixed Blade

Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 – 2.73" LC200N Wharncliffe Fixed Blade Knife

The Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 is a purpose-built personal-defense fixed blade knife built around a 2.73" full-flat-ground LC200N Wharncliffe blade and a full-tang, pistol-grip-style handle wearing black peel-ply-textured G-10 scales. Designed by Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser and inspired by the work of French knifemaker Fred Perrin, its Perrin-inspired 1.03" index-finger hole locks the knife into the hand for outstanding grip security, while jimping along the spine gives the thumb a non-slip ramp. A custom-molded Boltaron® sheath with a fully adjustable G-Clip™ and breakaway ball chain is included, so the SPY-FB14P5 can be carried on a belt, in a waistband, or around the neck. Going Gear is an authorized Spyderco dealer.

If you have been shopping for an LC200N fixed blade knife, a Wharncliffe EDC knife, or a compact USA-made self-defense knife, the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 covers all three roles in one 1.9-ounce package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the blade length of the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5?

The Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 has a 2.73" blade with a 2.40" sharpened edge, and measures 5.87" overall. That puts the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 in the compact fixed blade class — short enough for discreet carry, long enough for real utility work.

What steel is used in the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5?

The Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 uses LC200N steel. LC200N is a nitrogen-alloyed, ultra-corrosion-resistant stainless steel — it is the same steel Spyderco uses in its Salt® series, and it is effectively rustproof in saltwater and sweat while still taking a keen, easily maintained edge. That makes the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 an excellent choice for close-to-body carry, boating, and humid climates.

What is a Wharncliffe blade?

A Wharncliffe blade, as found on the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5, has a perfectly straight cutting edge with the spine tapering down to meet it at a very fine point. The straight edge concentrates cutting force along its whole length, so the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 slices cleanly through cordage, webbing, and packaging, and the acute tip excels at precise piercing tasks.

What handle material does the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 have?

The Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 has black G-10 scales with a peel-ply texture, secured by concealed internal pins to a full-tang skeletonized frame. G-10 is a fiberglass-laminate composite that is dimensionally stable, impervious to moisture, and extremely tough, and the 1.03" index-finger hole in the handle of the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 indexes the grip so the knife will not shift under hard use.

Does the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 come with a sheath?

Yes — the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 ships with a custom-molded Boltaron® sheath fitted with a fully adjustable G-Clip™ and a breakaway ball chain. Boltaron is a rigid thermoplastic in the same family as Kydex: weather-proof, abrasion-resistant, and it holds the knife with a positive friction click. The included hardware lets the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 be carried on a belt, inside the waistband, or as a neck knife.

How do you sharpen the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5?

Because the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 has a completely straight Wharncliffe edge, it is one of the easiest blade shapes to sharpen — there is no belly or recurve to follow. Lay the flat edge against a bench stone or run it through a guided system such as the Spyderco Sharpmaker at the factory angle and keep the stroke straight. LC200N is not a high-carbide steel, so the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 comes back to a hair-shaving edge quickly on ordinary ceramic or diamond media.

Where can I buy the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5?

The Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 is available at Going Gear, an authorized Spyderco dealer. Going Gear carries the full Spyderco lineup, including the Swick series, with fast shipping and expert customer support.

Is the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 a good EDC knife?

Yes — at 1.9 ounces with a rustproof LC200N blade and a Boltaron sheath that carries three different ways, the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 disappears in daily carry while giving up nothing in strength thanks to its full-tang construction. The finger-hole grip makes the Spyderco Swick 5 SPY-FB14P5 unusually secure in wet hands, and it is made in the USA and backed by Spyderco's warranty.
