The lens is made from synthetic sapphire (corundum) and has an optical grade anti-reflective coating on both sides to maximize the amount of light transmitted. Sapphire is many times harder and more scratch resistant than glass. Synthetic sapphire is made from the same material as ruby and sapphire gemstones but without the impurities that give gemstones their color.
