Benchmade H&K 14925SBK Scorch RT Dual-Action Automatic Knife

The Benchmade H&K 14925SBK Scorch RT is the reverse tanto, combo edge member of the Scorch family. Like its siblings it hides its automatic mechanism in plain sight: slide the top handle scale sideways and the blade fires, or ignore that entirely and open it by hand on the ambidextrous dual thumb studs. The 3.16 inch black coated N680 blade is chosen for corrosion resistance, and the compression molded glass filled nylon handle keeps weight down. This model has been discontinued and is no longer in production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does RT mean, and what is a reverse tanto good for?

RT stands for reverse tanto. Instead of angling the tip up like a traditional tanto, the spine drops in a steep forward angle to meet the edge, which puts a lot of steel behind the point while leaving a long, useful belly for slicing. On the Benchmade H&K 14925SBK Scorch RT (SKU BCM-14925SBK) that means a strong tip for piercing plus better general cutting than a conventional tanto gives you.

Is the Scorch RT an automatic knife or a manual folder?

Both, and that is what dual action means. The Benchmade H&K 14925SBK Scorch RT (SKU BCM-14925SBK) fires automatically when you slide the top handle scale sideways, and it can also be opened by hand on the ambidextrous thumb studs. Because a working automatic mechanism is present, it is legally an automatic knife however you open it.

Are automatic knives legal to own and carry?

The rules vary a great deal. US federal law restricts interstate commerce in automatic knives with certain exemptions, and state and local laws run from fully permissive to complete bans, sometimes with exceptions for military, law enforcement or emergency personnel. Check the automatic knife laws in your state, county and city before buying or carrying the Benchmade H&K 14925SBK Scorch RT (SKU BCM-14925SBK).

What is a combo edge and how do I sharpen it?

A combo edge leaves the front of the blade plain for clean slicing and puts serrations nearer the handle for sawing rope, webbing and cord. The plain section of the Benchmade H&K 14925SBK Scorch RT (SKU BCM-14925SBK) sharpens on any stone or guided system, but the serrations need a tapered round rod sized to fit inside each scallop.

Is N680 a good blade steel?

N680 is a nitrogen-alloyed Austrian stainless valued above all for corrosion resistance, which is why it turns up on dive knives. At 57-59 HRC on the Benchmade H&K 14925SBK Scorch RT (SKU BCM-14925SBK) it sharpens easily and tolerates wet conditions, giving up some edge retention in exchange. It is stainless, so no oiling routine is required, though keeping the spring mechanism clean and dry is worthwhile.

Where was it made, and is Going Gear an authorized dealer?

Benchmade builds its own knives in Oregon City, Oregon, but the Heckler & Koch line was a separate licensed program produced to a lower price point and listed as an import. Going Gear is an authorized Benchmade dealer, so the Benchmade H&K 14925SBK Scorch RT (SKU BCM-14925SBK) is genuine factory product.
