Frequently Asked Questions
What is a karambit knife?
A karambit is a curved, claw-shaped knife with a finger ring at the end of the handle, originally developed in Southeast Asia as a farming tool. The HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 is a modern fixed blade karambit: its inward-curving DC53 blade excels at pull cuts through rope, cord, and webbing, and the safety ring keeps the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 secure in the hand even in wet conditions.
What is the blade length of the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317?
The HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 has a 4.7" DC53 blade, as listed by HX Outdoors, measured along the curved karambit edge, with a 4.7" (120 mm) handle. The blade is 0.18" thick and 1.6" wide, giving the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 a stout claw profile.
What steel is used in the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317?
The HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 uses DC53 tool steel with a black titanium plating. DC53 is a Japanese cold-work tool steel that improves on D2 with better toughness and edge stability, so the curved edge on the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 stays sharp through repeated pull cuts. The black titanium coating adds corrosion resistance to the non-stainless steel.
What handle material does the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 have?
The HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 features a black G10 handle, angled so the knife feels like an extension of the arm, with a safety ring that fits around the pinky or index finger. G10 is a lightweight fiberglass laminate that provides a secure grip even when wet, and the ring on the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 prevents the knife from slipping forward or being pulled from the hand.
Does the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 come with a sheath?
Yes — the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 comes with a Kydex sheath with a belt clip that can also be attached to MOLLE webbing on a pack or vest. Kydex is a tough, weather-resistant thermoplastic that provides positive click retention for the curved blade of the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317.
Is it legal to carry a karambit knife?
Knife laws vary by state and city. In most of the United States a fixed blade karambit like the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 is legal to own, but rules on blade length, concealed carry, and carry in public places differ widely, so check your local laws before carrying the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317. Going Gear ships the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 in compliance with federal law.
Where can I buy the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317?
The HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 is available at Going Gear, an authorized HX Outdoors dealer. Going Gear carries the HX Outdoors fixed blade lineup with fast shipping and expert customer support.
Is the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 a good EDC karambit?
Yes — the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 pairs DC53 tool steel with a grippy G10 handle, a safety ring, and a clip-equipped Kydex sheath, making it a practical utility karambit for cutting rope, breaking down boxes, and trail chores. At 7.48 oz, the HX Outdoors Shadowfang Claw D-317 is substantial enough for real work while still carrying comfortably on a belt.
